On the Human Rights of Immigrants Under Health Reform

"There won’t be true reform in this country until the most vulnerable among us have their rights respected here" (Rep. Luis Gutierrez, D-Illinois).

After excluding undocumented immigrants from Medicaid and other public programs, and from subsidies for purchasing insurance, now the White House and Senator Baucus are looking to prohibit them from buying insurance products at market rates on the Exchange (read an article on the "Baucus bill" by the New York Times here). While the human right to health care by no means entails forcing people to buy consumer products that enable the profiteering of others, it very clearly mandates non-discrimination in the access to health services. Rep. L. Gutierrez has now pointed out just how far the U.S. is away from complying with this core principle.

ABC’s George Stephanopoulos wrote an article about the issue ("Latino Lawmaker Rips Obama for Making It Harder for Illegals to Buy Private Insurance") and which can be read here
