“Pushed Out and Pushing Back in New Orleans”

Today NESRI and its partner Mayday New Orleans appeared in a feature article entitled "Pushed Out and Pushing Back in New Orleans" by Tram Nguyen in the national news magazine Colorlines. In the article Nguyen discusses the demolition of public housing in New Orleans and the consequent resident displacement and hardship. The author discusses the growing number of advocates calling for the U.S. government to recognize the human right to housing, in response to policies that disregard the basic needs of communities. Sam Jackson of May Day is quoted, stating, “This is a new fight […] We done been through the old fight. That was about demolition and right of return, and then one-for-one replacement. This is something new here. It’s about housing as a human right.” NESRI’s Tiffany Gardner comments “This really is a national crisis … Many people are paying more than half their income for housing. We’re talking about the need for affordability for all Americans, not just poor people." To read the entire article click here.
