NYC School Discipline Reform Campaign Continues Fight to Reduce School Suspensions
On June 23, The NYC Department of Education (DOE) held a public hearing on new revisions to the Discipline Code, which include several recommendations from the School Discipline Reform Campaign (SDRC), of which NESRI is a member. The Campaign recommendations that were adopted include prioritizing positive Guidance Interventions and reducing the number of infractions that require automatic suspension. These changes are a positive step, but the SDRC continues to advocate for more systemic changes to discipline policy to reduce the more than 70,000 suspensions given in New York City schools each year.
