NESRI Rebukes Supermarket Giant Ahold for Misleading, Stalling Tactics

Giantcustomers

NESRI released a statement criticizing Ahold, owner of supermarkets Stop and Shop and Giant, for the company’s refusal to cooperate with groups working to protect the human rights of workers in the Florida tomato industry.   Since 2007, the Coalition for Immokalee Workers (CIW) has urged Ahold to improve wages and working conditions.  Although nine other major food corporations, including McDonalds, Burger King and Whole Foods, have signed Fair Food agreements with the CIW, Ahold has repeatedly avoided and stalled the human rights group’s efforts.  NESRI Director Cathy Abisa says the company is “dragging its feet on farmworker justice in its supply chain and attempting to co-opt the good name of a leading human rights organization, the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW), to cover its tracks.”  Read the press release.
