Hospital Companies Are Shutting Down Hospitals and Furloughing Workers in the Pandemic
Hospital companies have shuttered 135 hospitals in the last five years, including at least 12 during the first four months of the COVID-19 pandemic. The recent closure of Beaumont Wayne Hospital by Beaumont Health Systems, the largest hospital company, is emblematic of a larger story in which hospitals are operated on the basis of profit, the needs and rights of patients and health care workers are dismissed, and decisions about opening and closing hospitals are delegated to unaccountable, profit-driven companies.
