This report, Voices of Maryland’s Healthcare Crisis and the Rising Human Rights Movement, combines survey data from almost 900 people in 10 counties with personal stories from Maryland residents. It documents Maryland’s health care crisis, as well as the will of people in Maryland for a universal health care system that meets the health care needs of everyone in the state. The report finds that 45% of people surveyed have foregone needed care because of the cost, and that one in three families surveyed has a member whose health has gotten worse because they have been forced to skip getting care. Ninety-five percent of people surveyed said they believe that health care is a human right, and 75% consider it the government’s obligation to protect this right, but only 18% believe that the right to health care is currently protected in Maryland.

The report was co-published by NESRI and Healthcare Is a Human Right – Maryland, an organization of people in Maryland who are organizing for universal, publicly financed health care as part of the growing Healthcare Is a Human Right movement.
